Le lac artificiel de Saint-Guérin à Beaufort est presque entièrement vidé de son eau. Ce site, qui d’ordinaire se présente comme un lieu idyllique de montagne, montre ici, en cet fin d’hiver, son « envers du décor ». Un lieu triste, souffrant et dangereux. Il nous met à songer avec amertume à ce que fut autrefois cette vallée, certainement plus idyllique encore qu’aujourd’hui, très encavée avec de nombreuses cascades, des torrents puissants et une nature épanouie.

The artificial lake of Saint-Guérin in Beaufort is almost completely empty. Le photographe américain Bradford Washburn (1910-2007) est probablement le photographe le plus incontournable de la photographie de montagne au XXème siècle. On se laisse surprendre avant tout par son parcours de vie épique et brillant tout autant que par l’incroyable modernité de son regard : une vision intensément graphique et plastique de la montagne.
Ce livre rassemble une centaine de clichés sélectionnés parmi une dizaine de milliers de négatifs, de magnifiques planches réalisées en film noir et blanc grand format et notamment avec son emblématique appareil Fairchild K20.
Un photographe d’un autre temps pourtant, si l’on considère le réchauffement climatique et la responsabilité qu’il impose, le paradoxe brutal entre la photographie de montagne et l’usage d’aéronefs motorisés.

The American photographer Bradford Washburn (1910-2007) is probably the most important photographer of mountain photography in the twentieth century. We let ourselves be surprised by his epic and brilliant life journey as much as by the incredible modernity of his look: an intensely graphic and plastic vision of the mountain.
This book brings together a hundred shots selected from around ten thousand negatives, magnificent boards made in large format black and white film and especially with his emblematic Fairchild K20 camera.
